FRANCE Ocean heat record broken The world’s oceans just experienced their hottest June on record and could set fresh highs in the months ahead as El Nino and climate change drive temperatures even higher, scientists said yesterday. Global average sea surface temperatures last month were 20.98°C, beating the previous records of 2023 and 2024, the EU’s Copernicus Marine Service said. The record capped six months of near unprecedented ocean warmth this year, with prolonged marine heat waves, the service said. Average sea temperatures in the first half of the year were 20.04°C, slightly below the high set in the same period in 2024. The Court of Appeal declined Dotcom’s application to overturn the justice minister’s decision to sign an extradition order in 2024. The US wants the extradition of the founder of the Megaupload file-sharing system “to stand trial on charges of criminal copyright infringement, racketeering and wire fraud,” the court said in its finding. “The US alleges that Mr Dotcom was a member of the ‘Mega Conspiracy,’ which the US claims earned revenue in excess of US$175 million and resulted in losses to copyright owners of at least US$500 million,” it said. Hundreds of anti-riot police were on the grounds to ensure order. The rally was largely in support of Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who could face a plunder charge this week over campaign donations.
